When redesigns fail
It is not too often that I make unrequested comments on people’s redesign of their personal web sites, but I’m going to make an exception. The new Dive Into Mark front page is utterly appaling, especially considering it’s created by the author of the excellent Dive into Accessibility.
So, what’s wrong? Mystery Meat Navigation is the primary problem: There is almost zero contrast between the hordes of links and the page background. To add insult to injury, some of the links are covered by other links, so many users will not have a way of actually finding out where the links lead.
I could’ve said more, but I’m not going to. I’m just thankful that I have Opera and nntp//rss so I can avoid seeing this front page again.

Bingo. Personally I don’t think he intends for the item links on the main page to even be used, or at least I hope not. It’s more of a fun display mechanism. For me the biggest problem is I can’t shortcut the main page anymore and now it requires an extra click to get where I want to go.

I think it’s one of the best I’ve seen in a long time. The background links (which I guess no-one is supposed to use) just represents “the web”, and then there’s his site (the links) in the middle of it. Very cool.
